Governor Malombe, World Vision Commission Kshs. 840 Million Kangu Kangu Water Project in Kitui.

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe officially commissioned the River Athi–Kangu Kangu–Mutomo–Ikutha–Kanziko–Mathima Water Project at Mutomo Market on 19th September 2025, marking a major milestone in the county’s quest for universal access to clean and safe water.

The project, first conceptualized in 2014 in partnership with World Vision Kenya, features a 224-kilometre pipeline network, 13 storage tanks, and 52 water kiosks. It is designed to serve more than 100,000 residents across Kitui South and parts of Kitui Rural, including towns, schools, and health facilities.
With an investment of Kshs. 840 million - 51.45% from the County Government and 48.55% from World Vision.

According to Governor Malombe, the flagship project directly addresses the constitutional right to water, Kenya Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Kitui’s development agenda.

”My government is committed to ensuring access to safe and clean water for all Kitui households, with water points located not more than a radius of 2KM and the turnaround time for reaching these water points is reduced to a maximum of 45 minutes”. He said.

Further, he highlighted ongoing complementary efforts, including borehole drilling, sump wells, earth dams, and sand dams across the county.

The Governor praised the World Vision Kenya, county technical teams, and residents for their patience and partnership, and urged communities to protect the infrastructure from vandalism.

He noted that the project will be managed by Kitui Water and Sanitation Company (KITWASCO) for sustainability.

He however decried cases of vandalism affecting the project and directed the Water and Irrigation Minister to work with KITWASCO and local administrations in Lower Yatta, Mutomo, and Ikutha to end the vice.

Governor Malombe indicated the commitment to expand similar schemes across the county including Kitui East.
