World Bank Funded K-WASH Programme

Kitui Water & Sanitation Company Limited (KITWASCO) is among the 33 Water Service Providers from 19 selected counties benefiting from the Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (K-WASH) Programme funded by World Bank. The programme supports KITWASCO in strengthening water service delivery, improving operational performance and enhancing the long-term sustainability of its services.

Through K-WASH, KITWASCO is implementing targeted interventions aimed at improving its Operational Cost Coverage Ratio (OCCR) through Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction, infrastructure rehabilitation, revenue collection efficiency, digital systems improvement, staff capacity building and energy efficiency. Key interventions include:

  • Meter testing, replacement and resizing to improve metering accuracy and billing efficiency;
  • Pipeline rehabilitation to reduce physical water losses and improve system reliability;
  • Pressure management to minimize leakages and optimize network performance;
  • Customer identification and facility mapping to strengthen customer and asset information;
  • Preventive maintenance to reduce equipment downtime and improve asset performance;
  • Billing and metering system upgrades to enhance billing accuracy, revenue management and operational efficiency;
  • Proactive debt management and customer retention strategies to improve revenue collection and strengthen customer relationships;
  • Water-kiosk automation to improve revenue accountability, service efficiency and operational control;
  • Solarisation of water projects to reduce energy costs and enhance the reliability of water supply;
  • Energy audits and transformer servicing to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs; and
  • Replacement of high-lift pumps at the Masinga Production Plant to improve production efficiency and reliability.

Programme Impact

K-WASH is strengthening KITWASCO's capacity to deliver efficient, reliable and sustainable water services. The interventions are contributing to the reduction of water losses, improvement of infrastructure and operational efficiency, strengthening of revenue collection, enhancement of customer service and development of institutional capacity.

Collectively, these investments are expected to improve KITWASCO's OCCR performance, reduce operational costs, increase revenue efficiency and strengthen the Company's financial and operational sustainability. Ultimately, the programme will contribute to more reliable, efficient and responsive water and sanitation services for communities within KITWASCO's service area.
